IEA, Global sales and sales market share of electric cars, 2010-2021, IEA, Paris https://www.iea.org/data-and-statistics/charts/global-sales-and-sales-market-share-of-electric-cars-2010-2021

Anyone who’s driven an electric vehicle soon realizes how quick, smooth and silent they accelerate because of the simplicity of the electric motor and instant torque.

2022 may be the start of the hockey stick growth in the adoption rate of electric vehicles. Worldwide, EV sales grew from a 2.5% market share in 2019 to 9% in 2021. The trend is expected to accelerate as electric trucks are now actually coming to market. Some of Rivian’s first trucks are starting to arrive here in the Pacific Northwest and Ford’s F-150 Lightning should be showing up in the next couple of months. Indications are Tesla’s CyberTruck is experiencing another delay in getting to market and it’s launch may not occur until 2023.

As with any transformation, especially one on this scale, there will be logistical challenges – which are currently being exasperated by the pandemic. Supply chain issues that are impacting almost all goods, but particularly car and truck manufacturers are struggling with semi-conductor shortages as well as finding a sustainable resource for the lithium and cobalt used in their batteries. Despite these issues, the rate of EV adoption more than doubled in 2021 versus 2020.

Improving the infrastructure supporting EV drivers is another logistical challenge. Adding more public charging stations is critical as is improving the US’s electrical transmission capabilities. All of these efforts create new clean energy related jobs and result in the reduction of carbon emissions. Passing the Build Back Better bill will certainly help the growth of electric vehicles.

We’ve been installing solar photovoltaics (PV) since 2001 and EV charging stations since 2006 and believe EV & PV are a perfect match. Imagine using the sun’s energy to power your driving!

When you’re ready to make the transition, please keep us in mind when it’s time to install your electric vehicle charging station. Give us a call at 206-706-1931 or fill out our web form on the bottom of this page and tell us a little about the goals of your project.
